Physical education is an integral component of total Catholic education. To lead a productive life, students must be physically fit and understand the importance of maintaining physical fitness. Students develop skills and behaviors that enable them to participate in co operative games, learn to practice socially acceptable behaviors, and respect diversity. Physical activities offer an opportunity for students to attain success and self-esteem in a positive manner. Through Physical Education a student can appreciate that sound development of the mind and body are ways of becoming a happy fulfilled child of God.
SPANISH
Our Elementary Spanish program focuses on the goals of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. We want our students to gain language skills and cultural competency, preparing them to be global citizens able to participate in multilingual communities here in the United States and around the world.
Spanish classes meet once (PreK-3rd) or twice (4th-5th) per week and include prayers, stories, songs, music, games, skits, culture and holidays, and folktales to develop Spanish language and literacy skills. In the lower grades students are assessed on their participation and progress. Middle School Spanish classes at StMM meet twice (6th) or 3 times (7th-8th) per week for a longer duration. Classes become more rigorous as students progress and students will be assessed more often through quizzes and tests. Click HERE to learn more about our Spanish Curriculum.
Fine Arts
Music
Providing opportunities for children to appreciate music in local, regional, and global contexts will enhance their abilities to also recognize music’s role in their personal and spiritual lives. Students will perform, improvise, compose, and critically evaluate the elements of music. By understanding the role of music in the Catholic religion, the students will become more prepared to participate fully in Liturgy. The Fine Arts Music program seeks to enkindle students’ souls with the pure creative energy in all of life and instill confidence in the use of God given talents. When we open ourselves to all that has been offered to us, we open ourselves to God.
Band
Our band program is offered for students in 4th - 8th grade. Students in 4th - 6th who choose band have class twice a week and students in 7th & 8th have class three times a week. Students perform in two concerts a year and the older students also play at Mass.
Drama
The Drama program at St. Mary Magdalene offers students a wide variety of classroom and extracurricular opportunities not found at other diocesan schools. Students in 4th - 6th grade attend drama class weekly and 7th-8th grade have the option to take drama as an elective.
Visual Arts
Providing opportunities for children to explore, touch, see, hear, discuss and share allows for the outpouring of the gifts God has provided for all of us. Through the arts, students are able to gain awareness and understanding of their own cultural heritage as well as the vast global community. The visual arts program seeks to open students’ souls to the pure creative energy in all of life and instill confidence in the use of God given talents. When we open ourselves to all that has been offered to us, we open ourselves to God.
