Tips for a Successful Return to School

The staff at Great Schools has put together tips to help with the return to school. These tips and other school related advice can be found at: http://www.greatschools.org/back-to-school/preparation/71-back-to-school-blues.gs?page=all

Adjust to the new routine: A few weeks before school starts, talk about the friends he or she will see again, gradually move the bedtime to meet the needs of your child, and start to establish day time routines and schedules.

Get organized: write down on a central family calendar all the upcoming meet-the-teacher and open house events. Check the school calendar and plan ahead for days off, holidays, and conferences.

Shopping: try on school clothes from last year and make a note of any items you still need to purchase. Make sure to follow all dress codes.

Nutrition: plan ahead for a weeks’ worth of lunches, snacks, and after school snacks. Be sure to start the day with a nutritious breakfast.

Set priorities and schedules: create a family calendar for all practices, meetings, extra-curricular events. Determine how much your family can handle and try not to over-program.

Prepare for the homework ahead: set-up a routine and work area that is free from clutter and distractions.

Arrange for transportation: make it clear as to who will drop off and pick up the child. Practice the drive ahead of time to make sure to have the child to school on time.

Confirm after-school care arrangements: make sure to set this up ahead of time so there will be no surprises or rushing around.
